One of the responsibilities of owning property is paying property taxes. Real property is assessed every two years in odd-numbered years, which means assessments will occur next year in 2011. Assessments are scheduled to be sent out in April 2011. If your assessed value of your property doesn’t change, you won’t receive an assessment role. However, if your assessed value does change, you will receive an assessment role.
Property owners who disagree with the assessed market value of their property may appeal their initial assessment to local boards of review. Property owners must file a written protest with their local board between April 16 and May 5 of each year. It must be postmarked no later than May 5.
You may obtain an appeal form at your local courthouse or at http://www.iowa.gov/tax/forms/56064.pdf
Fill out the form and send/deliver it to your local county assessor’s office. A list of Iowa assessors and contact information can be found on the Iowa State Association of Assessors web site at

A property owner who is not satisfied with the local board of review’s decision, may appeal the protest to the Property Assessment Appeal Board

Its time that all property owners begin to refuse to pay for the foolish mistakes of elected officials in their spending habits. And for their unnecessary pay raises.
For example, I have seen in the past years, the purchase of computers for our school systems, that bypassed bid systems that could have provided better for less.
I don’t disagree with Mr. Meyer’s comments above. I would add that privileged status for corporations and businesses needs to end. When those corporations and businesses do not pay their share of legitimate taxes, residential property owners pay more. I think the old saw that “we” must be patient and understanding of corporations and businesses working capital needs so these organizations can create jobs is pure bogus smokey incense. The number of good paying, lasting jobs is but a tablespoon of soil plopped in the mighty ocean. This is commerce’s tidy excuse for evading a legitimate tax that the ordinary people must pay.
As for schools bypassing bidding systems, they are not the only taxing bodies that do this. The county government subdivisions do this as well as city governments which does not begin to cover bids going to businesses outside the state of Iowa. Let’s start giving Iowa contractors a chance.
